Summer start or summer stop? Prep for senior year starts now!

Summer break doesn’t mean you need to break up with your college goals. Your summer should be used to recharge and rest, but don’t lose momentum as you’re planning for your senior year of high school! This year is marked by admissions essays, campus visits, interviews, and financial aid applications. The fall can be a whirlwind, and I always hear from students freaking out because they’ve waited until the last minute or they missed an important deadline. Get a jumpstart on your senior year this summer! Check out our suggestions for how to elevate your college plans before school starts back:

Deciding on a Potential Major

While it’s okay if you’re undecided about your major, exploring potential fields of study can help you make informed decisions:

  1. Self-Assessment: Reflect on your interests, strengths, and career aspirations. Talk to professionals in fields of interest! Hire a career coach (shameless plug: we can help with that!) to focus on career opportunities.

  2. Online Courses or Workshops: Enroll in online courses or workshops related to fields you’re considering. This can give you a taste of what studying that subject might entail.

  3. Talk to Current Students or Alumni: Reach out to current students or alumni in your potential major(s) to gain insights into the curriculum, faculty, and career opportunities. LinkedIn is a great tool to finding alumni or college students you can connect with.

Exploring Different Colleges

Exploring colleges during the summer allows you to gain insight into various institutions and assess which ones align with your academic and personal goals. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Campus Visits and Tours: Schedule visits to campuses, attend information sessions, and take guided tours. This firsthand experience can provide valuable perspectives beyond what you see online.

  2. Virtual Tours and Webinars: Many colleges offer virtual tours and webinars, which are convenient alternatives if visiting in person isn’t feasible.

  3. Research and Compare: Use online resources to research different colleges, focusing on factors like academic programs, campus culture, location, associated costs, and facilities. Create a spreadsheet to compare key aspects of each institution (another shameless plug: we can do all that for you!).

Identifying People for Reference Letters

Strong letters of recommendation can significantly bolster your application. Use the summer to identify potential referees:

  1. Teachers and Counselors: Reflect on teachers or counselors who know you well and can speak to your academic abilities, character, and potential.

  2. Develop Relationships: If you haven’t already, build stronger relationships with potential referees by attending office hours, participating actively in class, or discussing your academic goals.

  3. Prepare a Resume or Portfolio: Share your resume or portfolio with potential referees to help them understand your achievements and aspirations. Keep it up-to-date as things change and give updated copies to your references.

  4. Identify References EARLY: Don’t wait until the last minute to ask someone for a reference. Once you’ve identified your list, go ahead and ask them now so they’re prepared when the time comes. Make sure you have multiple options in case someone says they can’t write a reference for you.

Identifying "Your" Story for Admissions Essays

Crafting compelling personal statements requires introspection and planning. Start early to develop your unique narrative:

  1. Reflect on Your Experiences: Think about significant experiences, challenges overcome, and moments of personal growth. Jot down notes on how these have shaped your ambitions and perspectives.

  2. Brainstorm Ideas: Brainstorm potential essay topics and outlines. Consider how each topic showcases your strengths, values, and the qualities you would bring to a college community.

  3. Seek Feedback: Share drafts with teachers, mentors, or peers for constructive feedback. Use their insights to refine your essays and ensure they reflect your authentic voice.
